4 Tips to help you choose the best Fishing Reel
This is one of those questions that you ask and get a different answer for every person you ask. So lets try to break it down into easy criteria.
- What is the biggest fish you are targeting?
- How much line capacity does my reel need?
- How much do I want to spend?
- What is the best fishing rod for the reel?
How big is the fish you are targeting?
For most inshore fishing you don’t really need a BIG reel. A medium size reel like this Quantum SL50PTS can usually handle large aggressive fish up to and including 20-30 pounds like a big bull Redfish or Black Drum.
For most inshore or surf zone fishing you will want to pick a reel size that matches up with a medium action rod. Really BIG reels are made for offshore fishing like this Penn Gold Series.
How much line capacity does my reel need?
Medium size reels usually carry a number like 4000, or 5000 and directly relate to how much line can fit on the spool. Braided, mono, and fluorocarbon fishing lines all have differing spool capacity. You want to consider how long you will be holding the rod and reel because the bigger the reel the heavier it is going to be. After a long day I have seen many a fishermen get cramps from holding a heavy reel.
How much do I want to spend?
If money is not an object for you or you just demand the best equipment for everything you do, then my personal favorite is the Van Staal. Completely waterproof and saltwater resistant.
If you want to keep it around $100 then something like this Penn Conflict might be what you want.
What is the best fishing rod for the reel?
I have an entire collection of broken fishing rods. So many that I had to buy a repair kit like this one to fix them all. That is when I decided that I will only buy Ugly Stik from now on. So far my Ugly Stik rod has not let me down in any way and I highly recommend them. I also prefer one piece rods but if travel size is a concern you might want a telescoping rod like this Plusinno® Telescopic Fishing Rod.
Maybe you want to buy blanks and make your own rods? If so then you probably want a rod builder like this Flex Coat Rod Building Station.
