You can catch southern sheepshead from the shore, a pier,  docks or boat with purple backed fiddler crabs. However, a boat increases your catch ratio by allowing you to go straight to the herd. Using a 6-7ft medium action rod  with a light tip you can feel the delicate nibbles of a small sheepshead and the strike of a monster crab killer. A big sheepshead, likes crunching up the fiddler, it’s ok to let them chew on this for a couple seconds before lifting the rod tip. Wait until you feel the thump before setting the hook. If it’s small, there is more of a nibbling and pecking action. Wait for it, watch for the rod tip to move down then set the hook.

Many times of the year fishing can slow down and you might have been after speckle trout or you might be after redfish. And sure you can still get out and catch fish but a lot of times with the cold fronts and the high pressures that come through your fishing may slow down a lot.

Want to Catch More Sheepshead?

Gun out and catch a redfish or two on the flats at low tide or maybe some trout around the oysters on a popping cork. And when the tide turns, come back inshore and get you some sheepsheadGo outdoors Georgia and catch some purple back fiddler crabs in the salt marsh. There are always plenty of fiddler crabs around even if you have to dig them up with a stick. If you are lucky enough and they’re running around everywhere it’s kind of a race to catch them and it’s almost comical running around chasing crabs.

You basically have about a 50/50 chance of hooking up per strike until you get the hang of it. So, you really need about 100 fiddlers per angler for bait, because you will lose many crabs and fish. Of course when available they can also be bought at local bait shops. Get a brand new money maker swing jig in a one ounce weight. Some ten to twenty pound line and a good strong hook but not one so thick that it impedes penetration. A big Sheepshead can bite right through a little mosquito hook. A very sharp stout hook is required to get past all the sheepshead teeth and crushers. Getting a good solid hook set can be difficult at times with big dumb bone-heads. Sheephead, how can I explain it, his head is almost like a thick primitive skull of all bone, cartilage, and many gak tooth.

The fiddler crab is the best bait to use for sheepshead and when you pull that fish out of 30 foot of water on a light trout tackle it will give you a workout. There is nothing better than finding a herd of  beautiful sheephead on an old sunken sailboat or a stack of back river blow-downs. You go out, dig your fiddlers and you get to any shore structure: docks, reefs, trees etc. it’s simple fishing and it’s fun to do.  The main challenge with these big 7 striped jetty snapper is feeling the super lite bite. One second it wasn’t there a split second later as soon as the bait hit bottom, …BOOM! Fish on!

Sheepshead Fishing in Cold Weather

If a cold front comes in at night and the winds start blowing that’s a rough day, yeah that’s fun. Now look, if your hook has been dulled you need to change it out with a fresh Trokar stat. I started using snails last year, I really like snails and they’re easier to find than crabs in January and February. That could be the key to finding sheepshead inshore and it’s still great fun in cold weather. If it is just too nasty to leave the dock you can actually free line fiddlers inshore at the marina around the boats if the current isn’t to fast.
