What is the difference between prawn and shrimp?
In the context of an Asian Tiger Prawn and a Georgia White Shrimp not much. In fact, both are actually prawns. The Atlantic White Shrimp common to the Georgia coast is not really a “shrimp”. It is in fact a prawn. (Litopenaeus setiferus “White Shrimp”) – is known by various common names including [white shrimp, gray shrimp, lake shrimp, green shrimp, green-tailed shrimp, blue-tailed shrimp, rainbow shrimp, Daytona shrimp, common shrimp, southern shrimp] is a species of prawn found along the Atlantic coast of North America. Shrimp is a common term for all forms of Decapod. Prawns and shrimp may look similar, but they aren’t, shrimp are different from prawn in taste and appearance.
Tiger Prawn VS White Shrimp
Prawns are larger so you will get fewer in total per pound than White Shrimp and are subsequently priced higher per pound. That is the main deference between the two; size. The tiger prawn is capable of reaching as much as 13 inches in length and could weigh more than a quarter-pound. Both prawn and white shrimp can lay up to more than 1 million eggs that hatch within 24 hours in coastal waters. The eggs could also drift over 100 miles before hatching in that first 24 hours. Prawns drop their eggs while shrimp hold the eggs.
Tracking the Georgia Tiger Prawn
The NOAA Nonindigenous Aquatic Species Tracker for Asian Tiger Prawn reporting, currently contains over 170 reports for the Georgia coast since 1988; the last report being in 2015. This lack of continued reporting in Georgia does not mean there are no more Tiger Prawns here, but more than likely that local fishermen have stopped reporting these catches due to the value of the Georgia prawns. Georgia Tiger Prawns have become a much requested item according to some commercial shrimpers. In any event there are undoubtedly more prawns in Georgia coastal waters than ever before.
Prawn vs Shrimp Recipes
There was recently an article that called Tiger Prawn the “Poor Mans Lobster”. This is a term that gets thrown around a lot for just about anything but Lobster. Tiger Prawn and Lobster probably cost about the same. A classic prawn/shrimp recipe is to lay the tails on a bed of lemon slices, brush with butter and flavor with your choice of spices. Then broil in the oven for 4-5 minutes. Apply a dusting of Parmesan cheese and enjoy.
- 1 lb medium shrimp, peeled and deveined
- 1 tablespoon pure olive oil
- 2 tablespoons garlic, finely chopped
- 1 1/2 cups white wine
- 1/2 fresh lemon, Juice only
- 1 teaspoon Italian seasoning
- 1/2 cup softened butter
- 1 tablespoon parsley
- 1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese
1 – Heat cast iron skillet and add olive oil.
2 – Add shrimp and cook until tender and no longer translucent, reduce heat. Remove Shrimp and set aside.
3 – Add garlic and cook 2-3 minutes. Do not allow garlic to brown – it will make it bitter.
4 – Add white wine, and lemon juice.
5 – Cook until wine is reduced by half. After it is reduced, add Italian seasoning.
6 – Reduce heat to low, and add butter. If pan is too hot, the butter will separate.
7 – Add shrimp back into sauce, add parsley, and season to taste with salt and pepper.
8 – Sprinkle with grated Parmesan Cheese
